The General Organization for Veterinary Services (GOVS) operates under Egypt's Ministry of Agriculture and Land Reclamation. Established by Presidential Decree 187/1984, GOVS is responsible for protecting animal health from infectious and epidemic diseases. Its duties include setting national veterinary service plans, enforcing quarantine measures to prevent the introduction of exotic epidemics, supervising abattoirs and slaughterhouses, and coordinating with international organizations. GOVS also manages the importation and exportation of live animals and animal products, ensuring compliance with health regulations to safeguard both animal and public health.
