Marennes Oléron Oysters are a renowned French oyster variety farmed in the Marennes-Oléron basin, one of the oldest and most prestigious oyster farming regions in Europe. Known for their unique flavor and green gills, these oysters are matured in shallow clay ponds known as 'claires,' where they acquire their distinct characteristics from the Navicula blue-green algae. The region produces four types of oysters: Fine de Claire, Fine de Claire Verte (the first seafood product awarded the Red Label in 1989), Spéciale de Claire, and Pousse en Claire. Marennes Oléron Oysters are the only oysters in France to benefit from both the Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) and the Red Label.
