Gurra Downs Date Company, owned by the Reilly family, is credited with the modern day expansion of the Australian date industry. Since 2001 they have been importing world best date palm genetics, supplying other farmers and field testing for commercial suitability in several locations around Australia. This includes a joint project with the Northern Territory Government at the Arid Zone Research Institute in Central Australia. Gurra Downs is the largest date farm in the country, producing 90% of domestically grown fruit.
