The Department of Fisheries is a critical wing under the Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying, Government of India. Established in 2019, the department is responsible for promoting sustainable fisheries, enhancing fish production and productivity, and supporting the livelihoods of fishers and fish farmers across the country. It oversees key initiatives like the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY), which aims to achieve a blue revolution in India. The department also works closely with the National Fisheries Development Board (NFDB) to implement and coordinate various fisheries development programs.
