The Central Plantation Crops Research Institute (CPCRI) in Kasaragod, Kerala, was established in 1970 by the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR). The institute focuses on research and development for plantation crops such as coconut, arecanut, and cocoa. CPCRI conducts both basic and applied research to produce genetically superior planting materials and improve the genetic potential of these crops. The institute has made significant contributions to India's position as a world leader in coconut and arecanut production through innovative research and technology transfer initiatives.
